Roger H. Norris, 80, of Marlton, NJ, died after a short illness with his family by his side. Born in Brooklyn, NY, to Paul and Ruth Hegeman Norris, they soon moved to Chatham, NJ. He and his late brother, David, were both Eagle Scouts. He attended Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA, before going on to Pennsylvania Military College, now Widener University. He spent two summers in the Merchant Marine and, after graduation, enlisted for a four year hitch in the US Navy, serving in a carrier air squadron out of Quonset Point, Rhode Island. His love of the Navy led him to write numerous articles in his favorite magazine, SeaClassics. He would also self publish three books: a novel, short stories, and poetry. He served as a volunteer fireman in three fire departments: Long Hill in Chatham Township, Mount Tabor in Parsippany, and Madison. He was a commercial insurance underwriter, mostly with Ohio Casualty, retiring when he was 70. He is survived by his children, Krista Rinaldo of Franklin Park, NJ; Alec and his wife Lee Ann of Cherry Hill, NJ; John Norris, Ph.D., of San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Lara and her husband, Mike Rutan, of Hightstown, NJ. He is also survived by his only grandchild, Allison Norris of Cherry Hill, NJ. Additionally survived by a cousin, Holly Teale of Califon, NJ, sister-in-law Roberta Norris of Cashiers, NC, nieces Susan Carter and Sally Evans, and nephew David Norris. His former wife, Patricia Groner, survives him. Services were private. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations in his memory to the Wounded Warrior Project.
