Dr. Leroy Meland, of Marlton, longtime educator and superintendent of schools, died peacefully at the age of 88 on June 11, 2020.

Throughout his life Leroy believed that nothing was beyond his reach if he worked hard, kept an open mind, and took even the smallest steps consistently in the direction of his goal. Son of Norwegian immigrant parents, Korean War veteran, and polio survivor, he was not only the first of his family to attend college, but went on to earn a Master’s Degree from Columbia University, followed by his doctoral degree, also in education, from Temple University. After gaining experience throughout New Jersey as a teacher (Madison), teaching-principal (Waretown), principal (National Park), and superintendent (Bordentown City Schools), his career path culminated with his being named Superintendent of Schools for Evesham Township in 1969, a position to which he devoted himself during the district’s prime development years. In this capacity “Dr. Meland made countless contributions to the children of the Evesham Township School District,” as stated by the Board of Education. He truly loved the planning of every school and the development of programs to enhance the learning experience for every child. Throughout his tenure he energetically applied his many talents and skills to the diverse challenges and responsibilities of this role until his retirement in 1992. The Leroy Meland Administration Building is named in honor of his many years of service to the community.

With wide and varied interests, Leroy was a highly intelligent, one-man Renaissance. He was a natural athlete who ran track in high school and played football and basketball in college. While serving in Korea, Leroy contracted polio myelitis. He fought his way out of a wheelchair and back into an active life, engaging in many sports throughout his life, including bowling, fly-fishing, and, his favorite pastime, golf. A devoted painter, Leroy initially explored oils before discovering his love of watercolor. He was delighted to be the recipient of an award for his work from the Perkins Center for the Arts in May 2019. He traveled extensively, read avidly, attended symphony and theater regularly, enjoyed woodworking and photography, was a master of the crossword puzzle, and played bridge nearly every Wednesday night until the end of his life. Leroy never stopped learning, never stopped relishing life to its fullest.

Leroy was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara Claire (Hoelzer) Meland, parents, Anton and Margit, and brothers, Arthur and George. He is survived by his children, Renee Christine Meland, Andrea Justine (Meland) Cunningham, and Dr. Roy Justin Meland and his wife Christine, and by his six grandchildren, Alexis Cunningham, Christopher Cunningham, Nicholas Cunningham, Jake Meland, Olivia Meland, and Lucas Meland. Memorial services for Dr. Leroy Meland will be held at a later date.

I met Leroy many years ago at Perkins Center for the Arts and as a teacher and Curator for Perkins it was always a joy to see what he had painted on any given day. I will miss seeing him and speaking with him after his Wednesday classes. It will leave a hole in The Perkins Center for the Arts family that will be hard to fill. He was always a gentleman of the highest order and truly saddens us at his passing.
For myself and the Perkins Center for the Arts Family we send our condolences to his family at this difficult time. I still remember the time he won an award for excellence in our members faculty show 2019 and how excited he was and the joy that I felt in presenting the award to him.
We will miss him .
