Obituary

James Bernard Wood was born on June 10, 1946 to the late Robert and Genevieve Wood in Philadelphia, PA. As a youth, he actively participated in community enhancement programs at the Heritage House with fellow peers, which helped to make improvements to the immediate neighborhood. He attended Thomas A Edison High School where he was a member of the Varsity Track Team and participated in the Penn Relays. He graduated from Thomas Edison High School in 1964 with a concentration in Architectural Drafting and Design.
James went on to attend college at Tennessee State University where he studied Engineering for two years before being drafted into the United States Army. As a combat engineer, he served as a Bomb Sweep Expert in the Vietnam War. Upon his return to Philadelphia, James worked for United Engineers in the Architectural Department. One of his hobbies was being a DJ, he played at local parties, weddings, and bars around the Philadelphia area.
James was a strong believer in family. He was a loving and attentive father to his children. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and brought him many moments of happiness. He was always there to listen and guide his many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Whether holding court with family members or gently nurturing young people, he was driven by his love and dedication for family. Further, he demonstrated his family dedication through creating and maintaining a photographic living history of special family gatherings and events. He enjoyed attending family reunions and would always work to make family reunions memorable. He provided email communications and dated countdowns for the Family Reunion in order to encourage as many as possible to attend the bi-yearly event.
He entered into eternal rest on September 19, 2020 and is survived by three beautiful and loving children. From his first marriage to childhood sweetheart Belinda Lynch, he has two sons namely Gordon Alexander and Terrence Whitmore Wood. From his second marriage to Carolyn Yancy Wood, he has a daughter, Domenique Noelle. He has three amazing grandchildren, Christopher Dickerson, Jadon Wood, and Naya Wood. He is also survived by three sisters, Robin Wood Dixon, Germaine Wood-Johnson and Joyce Riley; Daughters-in-laws Gloria Wood and Brenda Wood; Brother-in-laws Ronald Dixon, Sr., Ralph R. Johnson Jr, niece, Nicole Alston, nephews; Mark Alston Jr, Reginald Alston, Ronald Dixon Jr., Marques Dubose, Robert Taylor, Jeffrey Taylor and a host of extended family and friends.
Jim will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. He was an anchor in our life and made sure to always check in with his family, and show up to any events to show his support for the ones he loved. His presence will be immensely missed.
May he Rest In Peace with his immediate family members, parents Robert and Genevieve Wood, Jeanette Alston (sister), Victor Wood (brother), Michelle Dixon (niece) and Marcus Alston Sr. (brother-in-law).
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Sunday September 27, 2020 from 3-5pm and Monday September 28, 2020 from 10-11am at the Wiley Church 99 East Main Street Marlton where his Funeral Service will be held at 11am Monday.
