Obituary

Isander Velasquez passed away, at home, on July 19, 2020 at the age of 68. “Big Alex” as he was affectionately known, was born in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico on April 20, 1952; to Maximino and Carmen Maria Velasquez. He lived there until his parents separated and he and his Father moved to New York City.
Soon thereafter, Maximino met and married Carmen Lydia Figueroa. Within the next ten years, they added Edwin, Millie, and Little Alex to the family. Big brother “Alex” loved his siblings and took care of them, as well as his step-mother Dona Carmen.
In the late sixties, the whole family moved to Hammonton, New Jersey to start a new life in the country.
In the seventies, while working on a blueberry farm, “Alex” meet Elise Ramos from Philadelphia. They were engaged, married and moved to Philadelphia.
“Alex” and Elise would have four daughters, Naomi, Marivel, Tamicka and Lyvette. They moved into a neighborhood in the Spring Garden area of Philadelphia. They would live there from 1973-1981. Alex loved this neighborhood, he cultivated many friendships that would last decades. The playground was a meeting place for everybody. There he would play handball, basketball, baseball with his family and friends. Mt Vernon Street was a very family oriented block. Block parties and fire hydrants filled those hot summer days. His children played with other kids on the block. Folks at 17th and Mt Vernon were like family. Through the struggles, laughs, and tribulations Alex would always remember his time on Mt. Vernon St fondly.
In the 80s he moved to Poplar St. He lived there until his separation from his wife, Elsie. He then moved to Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico he met and had a son (Isander Velasquez, Jr) with Maria Vazquez. He also met and formed a new relationship with his half-brother, Rafael Berrios.
Alex came back to Poplar St in the late eighties. In Philadelphia Alex met Deborah Carr and fathered his youngest daughter Felicia Renee.
In the nineties, he met Karen Bruce, and he stayed with her until his passing. Alex was step-father to all of Karen’s children. Karen and her children loved and took care of Isander.
Isander worked with the Philadelphia Housing Authority for about 18 years.
Isander will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, friend. He loved his salsa music, tinkering with cars, and all of his children, step-children, and family.
Isander “Alex” Velasquez will be truly missed and may he rest in peace.
He is survived by his six biological children, step-children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his siblings.
