Elizabeth B. McElwee
Marlton, NJ

Elizabeth B. McElwee (nee Stohl) passed away on March 2, 2020, surrounded by her family at Samaritan Hospice in Voorhees, NJ. A first generation American, she was born in Elizabeth, NJ on June 20, 1918 to John Stohl and Maria Kerstner, immigrants from Hungary. In 1939 she married Joseph C. McElwee. Together they had six children. As a child Elizabeth attended Connecticut Farms School and Union High School. She left school to help support the family then earned her GED in 1984. After raising their children she was a cashier for 25 years for Grand Union Supermarkets. After retiring she made many quilts. Her parents moved the family to Union when she was three years old and eventually she would live in the family home for 79 years. She also lived in Elizabeth and Roselle Park. At the age of 96 she began to live with her children, most recently her youngest daughter, Debra, in Marlton. Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents, Maria in 1927 and John in 1949, her husband Joseph in 1973, her son Joseph Jr. in 1999 and her granddaughter Dawn DeRobbio in 2019; her siblings: John Stohl, Mary Brown, Matthew Stohl and half-siblings Theresa Canterella, Helen Rhodes, Barbara Hahr and Joseph Stohl. She is survived by her children: Mary Ann Van Ness, Patricia (Richard) Cudd, James (Lorraine) McElwee, Charles (Laurie Lewis) McElwee, and Debra Mills. She is also survived by her 9 grandchildren: Beth Valentine (Bill) Caldes, Kim Valentine (Brian Fahey), Laurie (Michael) Wiley, Janet Booth, Sharon (Mark) Wirant, Patricia (James) Cooper, Donna (Sheldon) Kohl, April (Craig) Pierce, James (Sue) McElwee; 20 great-grandchildren: Liam and Jonathan Caldes, Arianna (Nick) Dyer, Jackson Valentine, Aidan Fahey, Sean, Erin, Brenna and Morgan Wiley, James Kasey, Kevin and Kelly Cooper, Sheldon and Samantha Kohl, Matthew and Rachel Booth, Hunter Pierce, Audrey Sullivan and Shawn McElwee and 3 great-great-grandchildren; Matthew, Timothy and Benjamin Dyer. Elizabeth will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to the viewing on Monday March 9th from 9:45-10:45 AM at St. Joan of Arc Church, 100 Willow Bend Rd., Marlton, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery, Colonia, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Elizabeth’s name to either Samaritan Hospice, 5 Eves Dr., Suite 300, Marlton, NJ 08053 or to the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank everyone at Samaritan Hospice for their assistance and support.
