Obituary for Carol Dawn Winkelman

Carol Dawn Winkelman
Carol Dawn Winkelman, of the Village Greenes community in Marlton, passed away peacefully at home on March 1, 2019 at the age of 82, surrounded by her family. She was born on the Fourth of July, and always appreciated everybody celebrating her birthday with fireworks.

Carol Dawn attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, where she received Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees and earned the Performer’s Certificate in Voice and Opera. She was a lyric coloratura soprano. She sang professionally in many churches and synagogues in the Philadelphia area. She was the soprano soloist in places of worship in Haddonfield, Cherry Hill, and Moorestown. Carol Dawn gave many recitals in the area and also performed with the Camerata Opera Theater, which brought opera (such as Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel) to regional elementary schools. She was the soprano soloist in Carmina Burrana with the Pennsylvania Ballet. Carol Dawn also maintained a private studio, where she taught voice and piano.

Carol Dawn was very much a part of the friendly and caring community of Village Greenes. She was active in the Village Greenes Quilters and the Book Club, and participated in the many social events offered by the community. She would meet monthly with fellow “only children”. For the past several years, she led the VG Singers in the annual Hanukah/Christmas celebration.

She was a committed Christian throughout her life, active in the faith communities to which she belonged. While living in Chelmsford, MA, she served as choir director for Trinity Lutheran Church, nurturing that congregation’s music ministry and leading both the adult and junior choirs. In later life, for thirty-five years she was an active member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Cherry Hill, serving in a variety of roles, but with special affection for Altar Guild, Martha Circle, and Sparetimers.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years Ronald, sons John (the late Linda) and David (Lauren), and four grandchildren, Matthew, Elizabeth, Daniel, and Annie.

Friends may visit the family on Friday March 8th from 6:30-8:30 PM at the Bradley Funeral Home, Rt. 73 and Evesham Rd., Marlton, NJ, and Saturday March 9th from 9:30-10:45 AM at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, 601 Kings Highway North, Cherry Hill, NJ. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11:00 AM at the church. Gifts in Carol Dawn’s memory may be made to the Family Designated Memorial Fund of Saint Michael’s Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Locustwood Memorial Park, Cherry Hill, NJ.
